Nestled in the mountains of Alta Verapaz, Cahabon flows alongside a river that winds its way toward Semuc Champey. Here, small-scale Q’eqchi’ farming families live and work in close relationship with the land—and with one another.

This origin was born from a food sovereignty initiative, where the primary focus is nourishing the community. Cacao, in this context, is not the main driver—but a natural extension of an already abundant and well-cared-for ecosystem.

Grown within diverse forest gardens, cacao trees are surrounded by fruit, spices, and native species—creating a living system rooted in balance and reciprocity. Many families have been practicing organic methods for years, guided by both tradition and a deep respect for the land.

Cahabon is supported by local initiatives such as the Dokeshi Project, which helps strengthen farming practices, provides social programs, and ensures some of the highest payments for wet cacao in the region. Through this model, each harvest remains traceable to the families who cultivate it—supporting both transparency and connection.

More than 50 Q’eqchi’ families contribute to this cacao, working together as a community where knowledge is shared, support is mutual, and the land is tended with care.

This is cacao that begins with nourishment—of soil, of people, and of community—and from that, everything else grows.

A Legacy Rooted in Ancient Forests

Nestled in Guatemala’s lush Caribbean lowlands along the Rio Dulce, Caoba is a cacao farm where ancient history and living forest intertwine. For over a thousand years, this land has been home to indigenous communities, carrying the rhythms, wisdom, and legacy of cacao through generations.

Stewarded by the Bronson-Diaz family since the late 1970s, Hacienda Rio Dulce has been lovingly transformed from former pastureland into a thriving agroforestry sanctuary. Today, 95% of the farm rests beneath rich forest canopy—an extraordinary restoration of land through patience, devotion, and care.

Inspired by traditional Mayan forest-garden practices, Caoba’s cacao is grown among towering hardwoods, fruit trees, vanilla, and abundant tropical biodiversity. Here, cacao is not grown in isolation, but as part of a living ecosystem—one that nourishes the earth while honoring ancestral ways.

Across 300 hectares, more than 28,000 cacao trees flourish, including rare heirloom Criollo and Acriollado varieties gathered from across Central America. This rich genetic diversity gives rise to cacao with remarkable depth, character, and connection to place.

Carefully fermented and prepared with intention, each harvest reflects the hands, history, and forest that shaped it.

Here, cacao grows in harmony with a diverse landscape of coffee, banana, and fruit trees, within a thriving agroforestry system nourished by the constant presence of flowing water.

This farm is held by a family whose relationship with cacao spans generations. Juan, the grandfather, cared for these trees with devotion—remaining organic not by trend, but by necessity. Without access to chemical inputs, he preserved native cacao lines and allowed the land to flourish in its own natural intelligence.

Today, his son Cheyo continues this legacy, tending both forest and cacao with deep commitment. His work is an extension of what came before—protecting the land, honoring his father’s path, and ensuring that this knowledge lives on.

The cacao itself reflects this environment—rich, deep, and full-bodied, with a naturally high fat content and notes of coffee and banana. Each bean carries the essence of water, soil, and lineage.

Cradled in the mountains of Guatemala’s Pacific front—once home to the largest cacao forests in Central America—Mama Amor carries the wisdom of centuries in every bean. Here, the soil remembers ancient rhythms, and each tree holds a lineage of sweetness and resilience.

Mama Amor is brought to life by Nuevo Amanecer, a women’s collective of thirteen who cultivate cacao as both craft and devotion. Originally formed to support women in their community, the collective has grown into a space where ancestral practices are revived and cacao is tended with deep care and intention.

Grown within small village plots and forest gardens, this cacao reflects a living system—where cultivation supports both land and community. Through each harvest, these women continue a regional tradition, creating stability, artistry, and connection through their work.

The cacao itself is composed of diverse local Criollo hybrids, offering a naturally nutty richness with delicate notes of cherry and anise. Carefully fermented and prepared, each batch reflects the hands and knowledge behind it.

The Seed of a Soul-Sung Vision

Las Marias is our origin story—the divine invitation that allowed love to light our way. This farm is the initial heartbeat that expanded our relationship with cacao, and everything she embodies, into something much bigger.

In Kampura, “love” is an action. It is expressed through care for the land, the ecosystem, and the surrounding community.

Cacao grows within a biodiverse landscape, alongside cardamom, cinnamon, copal, palo blanco, all-spice, banana, and more—creating a living system where each element supports the next.

During harvest, a crew of 20 women carefully tend to the cacao, opening each pod by hand with practiced skill and care. Their work is essential to the process and is supported through fair wages and community-centered practices.

Las Marias has been recognized by Guatemala’s National Forest Institute as Best Agroforestry Plantation and received a Bronze award from the Cacao of Excellence program in 2023.
